PSYC 3980 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Facilitated Communication
Document Summary
Week 1 chapter 1: syllabus introduction (check to put exam dates on calendar) Research producers, research consumers: producers seek to create information through research processes. Must know how to randomly assign people to groups. Must know how to measure attitudes correctly. Being a producer helps deepen the understanding of a psychology inquiry: consumers enjoy obtaining research by reading about it and applying it in their lives. Important to be curious about information even if one is a producer. Helps to distinguish good and bad information. Licensure in these helping professions require knowing the research behind evidence-based treatments: facilitated communication- therapists help clients communicate by guiding their hands as they type sentences on a computer. Found out that the supporter influences the decisions the hand would move towards; facilitator is cuing the clients in some way. How scientists approach their work: fundamental ways scientists approach their work. Scientists act as empiricists, meaning they systematically observe their world.
