Suicide rates vary widely by country, gender, age, cultural background, religious affiliation, etc. Lower rates among devout followers of christianity, judaism, islam. 20+ suicides per 100,000: south korea, russia, hungary, germany, <5 suicides per 100,000: egypt, mexico, greece, spain. 10th leading cause of death in us (2010) Under reported; actual rate may be 2-3x higher. States with highest rates: wyoming, alaska, montana, nevada, new mexico, Higher in those divorced, separated, widowed; lowest in those married. Seen in children as young as 2-5 year olds (but rare) Very high rates among older adults (85+ year olds) Where there"s a rule, there"s al(cid:449)a(cid:455)s a(cid:374) e(cid:454)(cid:272)eptio(cid:374) . Males are more likely to commit suicide (4-5x higher) Females are more likely to attempt suicide (3x higher) Females in china are substantially more likely to commit suicide than males. Those who are successful are no longer alive. Those with suicidal behaviors often excluded from research because of safety concern.
