Safe drug with a similar chemical composition as the abused drug. Ex: methadone (opioid) and nicotine gum or patch. Goal: change the way the substance is experienced (prevent person from feeling good as a result of use) Drugs that make use of substances extremely unpleasant. Ex: antabuse (blocks enzyme involved in alcohol metabolism) and silver nitrate.
