Document Summary
Psychological entities that drive us to behave in ways that will help us meet our goals (speci c outcomes that people desire) Motives are more uid and changeable than personality traits. Needs (something necessary to survive or thrive) > motives > goals: approach v. avoidance motivation. Approach motivation > anticipation rewards for success (appetitive) Avoidance motivation > worrying about the negative consequences of failure (aversive) Everyone has both systems of motivation some may have more of one than the other: linking motives with self-processes. Approach-oriented people > tend to be high in extraversion, more likely to ght for rewards. Avoidance-oriented people > tend to be high in neuroticism, more likely to take ight from negative consequences, ten dot be lower in self-esteem and have lower life satisfaction. Trade-off between the two (bc everyone has both) but we tend to value approach more: situational changes in motivation.
