Personality (NOTES)
PERSONALITY
What is Personality?
● An individual’s characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting
● Unique to every person
● Historically, two main approaches:
○ Psychoanalytic (Freud)
○ Humanistic (Maslow & Rogers)
Sigmund Freud
● Key to explaining a psychological cause was in a person’s unconscious… goal = unlock
it
○ Free Association
● Mind is like an iceberg
○ Manifest vs. Latent Content (dreams)
○ Id, Ego, Superego
■ Id - Devil (Ex: “It’s okay to hit the person because they hit you”)
■ Superego (Ex: “It’s not okay to eat 12 donuts because people will judge
you and you’re going to gain a lot of weight”)
■ Defense Mechanisms
Neo-Freudians

○ Alfred Adler
○ Karen Horney (HORN-eye)
○ Carl Jung (Young)

○ Doubted that sex and aggression were all-consuming motivations
