Dimensional approach- this considers psychological disorders along a continuum in which people vary in degree rather than in kind. Diathesis stress model- proposes that a disorder may develop when an underlying vulnerability is coupled with a precipitating event: low stress: lower probability of mental disorder. Anxiety disorders make people apprehensive and tense: excessive fear and anxiety in the absence of true danger. Phobia- fear is exaggerated and out of proportion to the actual danger. Social anxiety disorder- fear of being negatively evaluated by others.
