Game bird: bird under pursuit or taken in hunting: esp wild birds hunted for sport or food. Game fowl: domestic fowl of a strain developed for the production of fighting cocks. Numididae (5 genus, 7 species); guinea fowl. Odontophoridae (9 genus, 32 species) new world quail. Phasianidae (41 genus, 88 species); pheasant, old world quail, peafowl, partridge. Tetraonidae (11 genus, 12 species); grouse, ptarmigan. Megapodidae (7 genus, 12 species); brush turkey. Typically strong sexual dichromatism: feather pattern and color different for each sex. Altricial chicks are: blind, naked, completely dependent on parental care. Precocial chicks are: down covered; able to walk, see; some regulation of body temperature. Many species are listed as (cid:862)threatened(cid:863) or (cid:862)endangered(cid:863) Congregate on booming ground of lek for competitive strutting displays in spring. The same lek may be used by grouse for decades. Most widely distributed resident game bird in north america. Native to europe, asia, north america, middle east.
