POLS 4900 Lecture 5: 5

The implication that entire families would be deported because of the enrollment of the
children in the public school system hardly seems the perception America would like within its
borders. While it remains at the discretion of the local jurisdictions to enforce laws enacted, the
perception of the local public remained that they would indeed follow the directives given at the
state level following the passing of the immigration reform legislation. With stigmas such as
these held to the government as a whole, local law enforcement is not exempt from the negative
perception as it carries out these functions on the local level. It is indeed these happenings that
continue to add to the public opinion among illegal aliens, and citizens alike who could be
mistaken for such that neither the state nor local police can be trusted. Local law enforcement
cannot possibly expect a cooperative public when it enforces statues that violate the civil rights
of those they aim to protect.
The Hispanic population is not the only one affected by such practices under the reformed plans
to eliminate illegal immigration. Every day citizens in Georgia, under the passage of its most
recent immigration bill have been charged with the civic duty of reporting undocumented aliens
under the penalty of the law. Not only does this impose upon the more than 23,000 people who
signed a petition against the measure the legal responsibility to report those suspected to be
undocumented immigrants against their belief, it does so with the consequence of a criminal
charge. (Severson) Citizens in the state of Georgia have been subjected to the impacts of a
controversial without as much as an acknowledgement to their opinions or even their right of
privacy implied within the national Constitution. The failure of the state to respect the opinions of
its citizens, in the form of the slap in the face that is the new immigration bill is yet another
example of the failure of government in ensuring that the public has a sense of faith in the state
