. The nature of a police officer’s work essentially creates a system of positive
punishment, a term used in psychology to describe a form of punishment in which some penalty
or price is paid by the offender (Conti, 2011, p.411). It is imperative for police officers to exhibit
most, but not all of the characteristics of good virtues and morals, and to hold pride and
confidence in the work they do, believing their actions may help society strive towards an ideal
world of fairness and equality.
Putting the process of recruitment aside, if recruitments by the police force in and of itself
is portrayed in a negative and unlikable manner, and this impression becomes engraved into the
hearts and minds of the citizens, it becomes an obvious deterrence for those with interest in
joining the police force. “With the rise of the Internet and social media, the norm is no longer a
reporter assigned to the crime beat” (Schulenberg & Chenier, 2014, p.266). As the problem
continues to steadily grow, it will be tremendously difficult for the entire police field to coax
potential candidates and qualified persons to join the police organization. Public image plays a
large part in the reputation a profession holds in the eyes of the public and the media. With the
ever-increasing amounts of police violence and brutality being highlighted in the media lately, it
is difficult for recruitment centers and police academies to enlist more participants and
candidates, and as such, measures must be put in place to improve the overall image of the police
force as to recruit new members. “Our findings suggest that the media depict the police as doing
nothing right” (Schulenberg & Chenier, 2014, p,279). The negative portrayal of violent police
acts and necessary acts of physical force depicted on social media platforms such as Facebook,
Youtube, Instagram, Snapchat, and many others of police officers are perhaps forms of
propaganda by opponents of police institutions in hopes of inhibiting the police officer’s ability
to perform their daily tasks and duties.
