The Justiceship of Earl Warren produced some of the most important rules and decisions
that expanded civil liberties. Warren Court brought an end to many problems in the United States
by incorporating the Bill of Rights. These many cases under the Court of Chief Justice Earl
Warren focused on expanding the legal rights of criminal defendants. The decisions that came
out during the tenure of the US Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren affected policing in that
officers were held accountable by their actions and violations
Mapp v Ohio was one of the most influential cases from the Warren Court decisions. In
this case, the police had reasonable suspicion that defendant, Dorlee Map, was harboring a
suspected bomber. When the police came to her residence and asked for consent to search her
home, Mapp refused to let the officers come in without a search warrant. Hours later, the police
returned and entered the residence claiming they had a warrant. When Mapp asked to see the
warrant, the officers showed her a random piece of paper, which she grabbed and shoved in her
blouse. While searching Mapp’s residence, the police found pornographic items. Mapp was then
arrested for possession of the pornographic items, which was illegal during the time. During her
trial, Mapp appealed her conviction claiming that the search of her residence was a violation of
her rights. The court said that the evidence that the police obtained was not allowed in court
because the evidence was seized illegally. Through this ruling, the court created the Exclusionary
Rule which made illegally seized evidence invalid in court. . (Gaines and Worrall, 2012, p. 456)
This court case affected American Policing because after this case, police were now not
able to use evidence seized through illegal searches in court
