But, stigmas placed on the police force by society and the media makes the recruitment
and appealment process highly difficult, in most cases. Creating a continual positive image of the
police force and maintaining this positive outlook would greatly facilitate the recruitment process
to further enhance the recruitment pool every year. With this, one can effectively reduce the
amount of negativity towards officers as recruitment officers continue to exhibit and demonstrate
the benefits of joining the police force.
Sometime between 2042 and 2050 the United States is projected to have a minority majority
within the policing department (Ferrandino, 2014, p.69). With the increase in the minority
population in the United States, it would make sense to find new applicants within these minority
groups. An increase in advertising the police department in minority areas would allow for a
variety of different officers with new and fresh perspectives. The increase in minorities would
also allow for a creative and diverse community. “As more diverse officers are hired, their desire
to join the subculture and be accepted may well have a positive effect on efficiency outcomes
(Ferrandino, 2014 , p.73). This overall would lead a positive impact into the societies the police
officers are enrolled in. The amount of recruits would applicants would rise and this would allow
for a better search for a qualified officer. As said earlier, the more applicants there are, the higher
the chances are when picking a officer with quality.
Although it is proven that female officers use their “ability to perform as effectively as men,
male police officers continue to reject women and question their competency as officers”(Muftic
& Collins, 2014, p.390). This stereotype leads to difficulties in regards to women who want to
join the workforce. Potential female officers who would like to apply for the officer job would
become afraid to join because they’re often questioned and judged that they would not be able to
work as efficiently as men.
