Document Summary
Colonists came to the new world for a variety of reasons. Escape from class or economic strata/ servitude. Character of its new colonists determined the political culture of america. The british and colonial governments were separated by an ocean. Relatively distant relationship with the government for 140 years. Britain retained strict import/ export controls on the colonies. Policies were difficult (and costly) to enforce and the colonists often ignored them. Colonists accepted trade regulation and no involvement in international affairs, they retained the right to levy their own taxes. This agreement was put to the test by the french and indian war fought from 1755 to 1760. It should be noted here that the good intentions of colonial leaders only went so far. Franklin"s plan resembled the articles of confederation, and would have provided for coordinated taxation and militia forces to defend the frontiers. British and french had rival claims to lands between the allegheny mountains and the mississippi river.
