Obergefell v. hodges -- same-sex marriage legal and recognized in all 50 states. Legal basis for this ruling was the 14th amendment -- equal protection clause -- marriage has huge implications for life, liberty, and property, not solely about love and symbolism. Local governments are subject to control by the states. But most states give their larger cities home rule . Home rule = non-interference by state governments when it comes to local affairs. Ex: atlanta knows what atlanta needs best, athens knows what athens needs best. Home rule has been contested, especially regarding sanctuary cities (places where local authorities do not help enforce immigration laws) 90,107 governments in this country -- increasing over time due to more people and changing needs/expectations. Gave federal government exclusive control over some issues, state government exclusive control over some issues, local government exclusive control over some issues -- states liked dual federalism, had a lot of power.
