Crito wants to help socrates escape when he is due for execution. It will ruin crito"s reputation - people will think he values money over friendship. 1: socrates is betraying himself - own sentence of justice (everyone believes socrates sentence was unjust, socrates is betraying his sons for dying - he chose to have children he must tend to. Crito - not only can public opinion disgrace you, it can harm or kill you. Socrates: society cannot do greater evil, or offer the greatest good (provide pure knowledge) Socrates: i am doing myself a favor by releasing my soul from. Public opinion is arbitrary - listen to some and not others (only listen to the good ones) Argument by analogy: listen to your doctor, not your neighbor. If one listens to matters of justice - it is harm to the soul. Harming the body and not the soul. More difficult to avoid wickedness than death.
