-Plato’s model of science is mathematics (intangible)
-Aristotle’s model of science is biology (Discover new species…. No evolution)
-In order to believe it, you need to observe it
-Question: Does Aristotle believe in God?
-Yes: Because you can observe acts of faith
-No: Because Aristotle believes in biology and darwinism ????.
Aristotle focuses on nature
• Doesnt believe in evolution because the world is eternal and Aristotle believes that one generation
procreated the next
• ARISTOTLE BELIEVES IN GOD
-To Aristotle, the mover is like God to him
-Plato thinks the Forms is independent from the human mind
-Aristotle thinks the forms is dependent from the human mind
-a priori: before experience
-a posteriori: after exp
-Substance:
-You can add substance to things
-The Christmas tree is a substance. If you add balls, the balls are the properties
-Aristotle look at all individual things (Substances). To those substances, I can give
properties to.
-The table (substance) is brown ( property)
-The property, brown, would not exist without substances
-Essential property: The tail of a squirrel, 4 legs, 2 eyes, etc
-Essential properties are properties unique to squirrels (essential)
-Accidental property: Brown/White, Tall/Small (Has this property, but this does not necessarily
make it a squirrel)
-Everything has a purpose. Nature created the squirrels because they have a purpose in the
world. Nature is like a human. Everything in the world has a purpose/goal.
-Teleology: Everything/Everyone has a goal
-Nature has a will
-Things are done with a process. Materials are different. What makes me human is my shape.
What makes me my particular self: How my body is unique to me and matter
-Potentiality vs Actuality
-Why does nature provide seeds? To make more trees
-Seeds have potential to become a tree, but not yet
-A seed is an actual seed. Potential tree
-I am an UGA student and a potential graduate
-Nature determines if a seed is a tree
-There are external factors that prevent it from being a tree
-But still, the seeds have goals and that cannot be changed
