Lecture 1: the constitution (feb. 13: the constitution as compromise, 1783: british defeat--we are now an independent nation, founding fathers made it a compromise. Many assumed it was to be on the same level as the ten commandments-- holy, without error, perfect for any time period: the people did not include women, non-whites, or those without property. The founding fathers (fought like siblings) disagreed on what was fundamental about democracy. Efforts to expand democracy began in the jacksonian era: republicanism, (small r"); common people, not the same as today"s term, war was won, british would recognize america as a sovereign nation and remove their troops. First nation founded on enlightenment philosophy; first republic : republic: virtuous (think of commonwealth) citizenry elects representative government to protect natural rights of life, liberty, and property, fear of arbitrary power, monarchy, and natural aristocracy.
