Orientalism created by europeans, but is a construction and is based on european ideals. Orientalism is a contrasting image to europe. Occident and orient rely on each other. Describing the orient (said is describing a particular version of the orient) The middle east as the orient is made-up. Generalizing the orient is a very political decision. Based on european ideals of what is civility and exotic things. People simplify the gullah/geechee when they tell stories about the culture. When the middle east is represented, the culture is flattened because it isn"t represented correctly.
