ENTO 2010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Thoracic Ganglia, Central Nervous System, Lobes Of The Brain
Document Summary
Efferent: carry signals away from cns, stimulate muscles and glands. Tritocerebrum: connects to stomatogastric system; integrates input from other brain lobes. Do not detect images, but rather changes in light intensity. Found in holometabolous larvae and other forms lacking compound eyes. Usually between the thorax and abdomen, but may be elsewhere. Approximately 50% of all insects species feed on plants. Insects are the dominant herbivores on the planet. Insect galls: wasps, aphids, thrips, moth catepillars, and beetles. Most feed on less than three families of plants. Only one species among 8000 that eats single species of plants. Spines/thornes: modified leaves/stems deter larger mammalian or reptilian herbivores, not useful against insects. Trichomes: specialized epidermal cells may be straight spikes or hooks. May deter feeding or slice through insect cuticle. Epidermal structures and containing capsules of resins that may entrap insects, clog spiracles, and mouthparts. Some passion flowers have fake eggs that discourage oviposition.
