The objective of this study was to assess land use on water quality across
different streams. We assessed 2 streams in Athens-Clarke County: Orange Trail and
Lily Branch. We did cross section on each stream in order to measure the width and
depth of the river, which meant using a representative sample of a larger part, for
our stream sample. Lily Branch is an urban watershed located on the UGA campus
and the Orange Trail is a rural natural stream located at the State Botanical Gardens.
Looking at the two watersheds and their environment, I hypothesized that: the bio
index value will be higher for the Orange Trail, the cross sectional area of Lily Branch
will be greater than the Orange Trail’s, and that there will be more sensitive
organisms at Orange Trail. I predicted these statements because I had prior
knowledge that the Orange Trail had a higher riparian buffer zone than the Lily
Branch, which lead me to think that Orange Trail is less likely to be polluted.
METHODS
The first location we measured was Orange Trail. It was a natural stream with
a large surrounding riparian buffer zone of 400 meters. At the time of our
observation, it was cold and raining. The vegetation included shrubs and trees and
