No tail- more upright positioning, got selected against. Easier to sit or stand upright than monkeys. Also comes from mixed diet-- jaw shape changes. Largest primate, 10 feet tall, 1200 lbs, lived to 300,000 years ago. Gibbons- have big long arms and fingers, spend lots of time in trees, can walk on two feet. Spend lots of time on ground, big difference between males and females - sexual diamorphic. Eat mixed diet which requires them to use a large mass of territory. Originated in spain which raises questions of relation to humans. Lowland and cross river-- eat more of a mixed diet than the eastern. Connecting humans and non-human apes: the miocene links. Shows traits if humans and chimps in the face and skull, shows some blending. Dates to exact time of human and chimp diversion. However: not in an area where humans lived. Social organizations- large groups of up to 200.
