Review session tuesday feb 7 at 4pm, mlc 248. Not always either/ or, can build on eachother but still important to understand. Not the same thing as personal theory- as in vernacular usage. A testable and correctable explanation of observable phenomena that yields new information. A scientific theory has been proven and supported. How species change as well how new species emerge. Fossil record-- observe how creature have chnaged over time, look at fossil ancestors. Living species-- look at physical traits and genetic codes, dna, ex: bats have evolved to eat centipedes and scorpions, immune to poison. Essentialism- denies change, everything is the same as they were before. Great chain of being- noticed different species had some. Great chain of being- noticed different species had some similarities, could be organized by similarities, grouped living species toegther. Catastrophism- people started describing fossils and trying to explain them, koubey-- founded idea of catastropism.
