Animals are more efficient early in life and as they grow they become less efficient. Energy requirement (kcal/d: =maintenance (bw) + growth (protein and lipid accretion) As the animal is growing, maintenance increases and feed deficiency decreases. As an animal gets older and stops growing, growth requirement (protein and lipid accretion) becomes 0 since the animal is just maintaining their body weight. Fish are the most feed efficient because of 3 things. 1. 5 pounds of feed grows 1 pound of fish. There are 3 reasons why: (1) fish excrete ammonia to make uric acid costs energy/atp (2) fish don"t have the energy to stay up right, so they have buoyancy (3) fish maintain their body temperature well. Don"t need to know feed efficiency in growing horses and pigs: as get older, grow faster but eat more so feed efficiency is lowered.
