Parameters: the study"s interest boundaries, normally quantitative or qualitative. Sample: a select group used in a study. Statistic: a fact or piece of data from a study of a large quantity of numerical data. The art and science of learning from data designing studies, analyzing the data, and translating data into knowledge and understanding of the world around us. Marketing => what color packaging would increase sales?, etc. Polls => predict the outcome of an election. Design plan how to obtain the data (chapter 4). We must do this in a non-biased way. Description summarize the data with graphs and numerical summaries (chapter2-3). We take the information to extend to the rest of the population. Inference use data from a random and representative sample to draw conclusions about the population of interest. Before we can do inference we need to understand some basic probability concepts (chapters 5-6) and how sample summaries behave (chapter 7).
