SOP 3004 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Hindsight Bias, Internal Validity, List Of Fables Characters
Document Summary
Science is a set of values and methods. Results of social psychology studies can seem obvious. Skepticism (one study does not = instant theory) Open mindedness (if new evidence suggest views are inaccurate) Familiarity with the subject does not mean that we understand, we can be misunderstanding actually because of it. Hindsight bias: the tendency to exaggerate prediction of an outcome after knowing that it occurred. We might think that we understand situations, but in social psychology things are very different from what they seem. Hypothesize-collections of variables organized into a testable statement of prediction. Operationalize-turning theoretical variable into things that can be measured. Operational variable clear and concise detailed definition of a measure. Some statement showing relationship between the two: observational description (must be objective, correlational prediction, correlational coefficient, correlation does not equal causation, experimental answer causal questions. Revise or replicate-if confirmed, replicate your study; if disconfirmed, revise your hypothesis.
