Teaches the physical, mental, and social skills (culture) needed to survive in society. Also how people acquire identity, sense of self. Humans with lack of socialization do not fully develop into social beings (feral and isolated child) Self- unique traits, behaviors, and attitudes that make us who we are. Reflexive behavior- seeing yourself from outside point of view. Looking glass self- sense of who we are based on reactions from others. Identity- group memberships, traits we show others, traits others ascribe to us ( self" is one piece of your identity) Ability to use other people"s perspectives and expectations in forming our own behavior. Play stage- can only think about perspective of one other person for short time. Game stage- start to develop ability to think about object of the game, from many points of view. Generalized other- perspective of society and its values and expectations. Process of learning a new and different set of attitudes, values, and behaviors.
