PCB 3063 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Replisome, Thymidine, Base Pair
Document Summary
Dna damage and repair: dna damage can occur due to lots of different things. There can be mutations in dna simply from the replication process (issues with polymerase putting the wrong base in and this mistake persisting through generation). Then replication will have errors, since the replisome will be unable to recognize the base as the base it is. Ros can build up in cells just from normal metabolism. Proteins break them down, but stress (of all types) can cause upregulation of ros. Ionizing radiation: beta, gamma, cosmic radiation can cause strand breakages. But if the rate is too high, it can hurt the organism. The only trisomy"s that are compatible for life are 13, 18, and. 21, and even then, many of the people with those syndromes have shortened lifespans. These are normally incompatible with survival or normal reproduction: these are the most common mutations in humans, as there is 1 missegregation in every 25 meiotic divisions.
