PCB 3063 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Abo Blood Group System, Agouti Gene, Antigen Presentation
Document Summary
Extensions of mendelian genetics: we started class off by looking at common mistakes in the worksheet. The probability questions, 3 and 4, were commonly missed because of misunderstandings of the sum and product rule. Most people didn"t look at the combinations of events that were possible (sum rule) and just used the product rule. Make sure to look at all the possibilities when making probabilities. Also, make sure to differentiate between obligate heterozygotes, which have a child with a recessive trait, and the parents of obligate heterozygotes, which are not necessarily carriers: note: dr. Type 0 have no antigens on their blood cells but have anti-a and anti-b antibodies, so if a or b or ab blood ends up in their body the donor blood will get attacked. Type a has a-antigens on the cell and will react against b antigens, meaning they have anti b antibodies.
