Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity that interferes with functioning or development. Inattention examples: often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, at work, or during other activities, often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities. Hyperactivity examples: often fidgets with or taps hands/feet or squirms in seat, often leaves seat in situations. Subtypes: combined presentation, predominantly inattentive presentation, predominantly hyperactive/impulsive presentation. Age limit for the onset of symptoms: 12 years. Occurs in more than one setting such as school and home. Factors contributing to adhd: biological factors. Less connectivity between cortex and areas for motor behavior, memory and attention. Parents with a problem of substance abuse. Asd: wide range of functioning and outcomes, often do poorly on measure of intellectual ability, best predictor of the outcome iq and language development before age 6.
