Give a general timeline of the history of evolutionary thought. Describe darwin"s idea of evolution by natural selection and the evidence he used to support it. All biological populations change over time: this is evolving. Why do we care: applications to the study and treatment of diseases, agricultural and industrial applications, implications for conservation, diversification of life. Evolutionary theory refers to our understanding of the mechanisms that result in genetic changes in populations over time: before darwin, the mechanisms of evolution were missing, jean-baptiste lamarack proposed a potential mechanism of evolution in 1809. Misconception 2: evolution is not the same as natural selection: natural selection is a mechanism by which evolution occurs. Misconception 3: evolution is something that happens to populations, not individuals. Didn"t want to become a doctor, so he began training for the clergy.
