Document Summary
As muscles contract, bones moved at synovial joints. Shapes of bones at joints are major indicators of the movements allowed. Gliding- sliding flat surface of two bones across each other. Circumduction: move limb so it goes around as if by a cone, combo of different mvmts. Flexion = forward motion of body at hips. Abduction: move away from midline of body. Rotation: movement medially or laterally around an axis. Protraction: move body part in anterior direction. Dorsiflexion: lift foot so superior surface approaches shin. Plantar flexion: depress foot while elevating heel. Example: intercarpal joints, intertarsal joints, those between vertebral articular surfaces. Axle (rounded bone) fits in sleeve (bone and ligament) Condylar joint biaxial movement flexion and extension about medial/lateral axis adduction and abduction about anterior/posterior axis. Saddle joint biaxial movement adduction and abduction flexion and extension. Examples: carpometacarpal joints of thumbs (pulling thumb towards palm) Multiaxial movement flexion and extension adduction and abduction rotation.
