Document Summary

The theory that right depends on the beliefs of the person making the decision: relativism is at one end of a spectrum. Cultural relativism: what is right or wrong is determined by the particular culture or society, flaws. Requires acceptance of cultures that allow intolerance or violence towards other cultures. Requires acceptance of cultures that are intolerant toward dissenting minority subcultures. Creates unresolvable con icts for members of more than one culture i. e. recent immigrants. Individual relativism: to thine own self be true , as long as the person does what he/she believes is right . Situational relativism: argues that every situation is so di erent, there can be no rules not even general ones, moral principles, therefore, are useless, requires a human impossibility considering each situation totally on its own, without reference to past experiences. Media professionals are not relativists: rejecting relativism does not require accepting absolutism.
