Models of health: traditional medical model, bio psychological model. Psychological- eating due to coping with your issues, people are not knowledgeable about healthy eating. Changing nature of illness: acute illnesses chronic illnesses (tuberculosis) Metabolic science (heart disease: is it as simple as calories in, calories out , ghrelin- hunger hormone. They took bottles and put milkshakes in them all contain 300 calories. Randomly assigned people to 2 different milkshakes with labels on them, one label said 620 calories and the other said 140 calories (but they all had 300 calories) Improvement in symptoms because you believe the medicine will have an effect although it is just a sugar pill: nocebo effect: a negative impact on symptoms following a treatment with no apparent physiological effect. You are told a list of symptoms with taking a medicine so you will start feeling them: individuals beliefs are key. Example: drug clinical trials use experimental research designs to take the placebo effect into account.
