Psychological disorders- syndrome with significant disturbance in an individuals cognition, emotion regulation or behavior. Diagnose in order to describe disorder, predict progression, apply appropriate treatment. The diagnostic and statisical manual of mental disorders was published in may 2013 and allowed for consistency of diagnosis between clinicans; was heavily critized of overdiagnosis and too many disorders. Comes from an individual"s genes and amyglada abnormalities & prefrontal cortex. Historical inability to control environment: panic disorder- recurring panic attacks, periods of intense fear, and feelings of impending doom or death. Associated with some physiological symptoms such as rapid heart rate; dizziness. Usually occur after stressful or frightening event: obsessive-compulsive disorder- recurrent, persistent, unwished-for thoughts or images (obsessions) and repetitive, ritualized behaviors to avoid disaster (complusions) Usually in teenagers and young adults: post-traumatic stress disorder- Symptoms include haunting memories, nightmares, withdrawal, anxiety and insomnia. Many factors that impact ptsd: frequency of assault; genetic predisposition.
