PSYC100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Michael Shermer, Thalamus, Parietal Lobe
Document Summary
Distinguish between the roles of top-down and bottom-up processing in perception. Often individuals who have lost a limb have reported feeling in the limb that is no longer there. Sensation is about detection and input (the detection of reception of stimuli in the physical world) Perception is an interpretation (integration of information and processing) Combines the processing and interpretation of the outside world into an individual"s experience of the outside world. Sensory receptors in the brain continue to believe there is pain in the arm when in fact the arm is no longer there. There is no such thing as an objective reality. Experiences really color the way an individual view the world. Bottom-up processing: to take individual bits and pieces of sensory information. Example: take a look at a word on a page, to an individual. Top-down processing: expectations, past experiences, etc. (higher order cognitions)
