PHIL100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Theism, Pointless
Document Summary
The problem of evil: the strongest argument for atheism. Every religion seeks to explain malice and misery. Moral evil: undeserved pain and suffering resulting from free choices of moral agents (ex: murder) Must greater good, to prevent a worse evil from happening. Every evil is necessary if god exists vs. not possible that god exists if pain and suffering occur. Argument from evil: not possible god exists and pointless evil occurs. Self-sabotage: you have a goal, then do an action to harm the chances of achieving that goal. Two scenarios: you don"t rescue someone from necessary evils (dentist, you try to rescue a small child being beaten with a baseball bat. Argument contra standard claim: the standard claim would undermine morality, seeking to develop morally would be a worthy divine goal, there is reason to think the standard claim is false if god exists.
