Goal is to keep the same quality and quantity of cells circulating. Code for proteins that regulate cell growth (signals mitosis) and differentiation. Protein may be made when it is not needed. Quality - mutation and lack of maturation; cells gone wild. Example - urinary bence-jones protein seen in multiple myeloma; psa for prostate cancer. Chemicals (benzene, vinyl chloride, asbestos) > lung ca. Radiation (radioactive, x-rays) - nuclear fission (ionizing radiation) > radioactive iodine > uptake by thyroid; sun (uv radiation) > skin ca. Cigarettes > lung ca: as you age, the incidence of cancer increases, has to do with genetics and environment, viruses. Virus alone is not enough to cause cancer (because these viruses don"t cause ca in everybody) but in many people there are associations/correlations. 13q14 > retinoblastoma: genetics, bacterial exposures, h. pylori (which cause ulcers) - associated with stomach lymphomas, diet, hormones. Nitrates/nitrites used as preservatives in fish and meat (especially lunch meat) > stomach ca.
