Pathophysiology - les fails to close and stomach contents reflux into esophagus causing inflammation; persistent relaxation of the les; 1-2 hrs after eating in adults (immediate in infants) Prevalence - common in infants due to immature digestive systems; outgrow by 1 year. Adult risk factors - obesity, pregnancy, hiatal hernia, smoking alcohol, food, anything that increases abdominal pressure (lift, bend, cough) If you"re a baby and you feel this pain - you stop eating. Baby can"t take the zantac or antacids - a lot of question as to whether to medicate babies for this. Child that refluxes while sleeping - act like they"re unsettled, moves all about the bed.
