Object that is studied in linguistic is language. If language is science, we should not simply make an inventory of linguistic phenomena and describing them and explain data. Concern of theoretical linguistic is mental representation of language knowledge. How is knowledge of language acquired? (acquisition) How is knowledge of language put to use? (performance/processing) It is the linguistic knowledge as represented in a speaker"s mind. Knowledge of language that enable us to connect sound/gesture with meaning-to understand a spoken or signed expression to express our thought through speech or signs. Contains the form of the grammar of all human language. It is a description of a mental grammar. Set of rules proposed by some people to tell what is the correct and incorrect way to speak, it is consciously learned and needs to be reinforced. Exp: in the english language you cannot end a sentence with a preposition. Linguists use both naturalistic data and experimental data.
