KAAP220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Homeostasis, Trochanter, Clavicle
Document Summary
Flat, opposing surfaces; typically are broad and provide way for attaching muscles; typically where you also want to protect things, like the cranium, sternum, ribs. Irregular shaped bones formed between cranial bones - in sutures. Sutures are fibrous connections that develop and help to keep all of the bones very strong. Elevations/projections - bumps; where muscle, tendon, and ligament attachment; at joints where adjacent bones articulate. Tuberosity - small, rough projection that takes up a broad area; doesn"t stick as far away from the bone as a tubercle. Outer covering of compact bone (cortical bone) - strong, organized bone. Articular cartilage - covers portions of epiphysis that form articulations marrow - red bone marrow (rbc production) and yellow bone marrow (adipose tissue and energy reserve) Perpendicular, across each lamellae, you can see the canals (canaliculi) that connect each of the osteocytes; canaliculi connect lacunae with each other and central canal.
