Document Summary

Epidermis - composed of stratified squamous keratinized epithelium. Reticular layer (*: components, cutaneous membrane, accessory structures. Exocrine glands - sebaceous glands and sweat glands. Arrector pili muscles - tiny muscles attached to base of hair follicles; allows hair to stand on end when we get goosebumps. Cutaneous plexus (network of blood vessels) - supply epidermis and dermis: subcutaneous layer (hypodermis) = superficial fascia; on top of deep fascia, functions of integumentary system - protection (protects everything underlying it from outside. Only looks spiny when on a prepared slide. Contains dendritic (langerhans) cells - part of immune response defending against microorganisms and superficial skin cancers. Spines = desmosomes that connect cells to each other. Cells themselves are becoming thinner and flattening out: stratum granulosum (grainy layer) - only 3-5 layers, most cells have stopped dividing and started producing keratin and keratohyalin.
