Cities along the way became very prosperous. Lowered the cost of shipping between east and midwest, 1807 - travelled from ny to albany (clermont) Niagara falls was one of the most popular. Not yet transcontinental - but began in ne and went to cities that were formed with the push out west. First train was called the stourbridge lion. Named after the town in england where it was manufactured - operated on a gravity rail. Going downhill, using a series of brakes to monitor the speed. Put the us on the map for sustainability. Merchants began to replace the jeffersonian idea - less farms. The people are no longer relying on their communities.
