Document Summary

Four functions families fill for each other in society: family formation and membership, economic support, socialization and nurturance, learn morals, values, and cultures, protection of vulnerable members. Technically families are only supposed to create productive citizens. Judging resiliency in a family depends on. Degree to which they are able to successfully fulfill their functions so that individual family members and other social systems benefit. To be a family (and not individual outcome) A minimum of two family members must be involved. The outcome must represent the product of family relationships. Families desire to engage in relatively stable patterns of interacting as they juggle the demands they face. They do this with their existing capabilities (resources + coping behaviors= protective factors) to achieve a level of family adjustment. There are times when family demands significantly exceed their capabilities, and when this imbalance persists, families experience crisis, which is a period of significant disequilibrium, disorganization, and disruptiveness in the family (high stress/crisis)
