Benevolent , radical slave owner or mistress would teach them how to read or write. Sometimes enslaved person would take a page of newspaper or anything with written words on it to gain literacy. Learning to read was one of the most punishable offenses. Enslaved african americans risked life and limb to learn to be literate. Formal classical education was viewed contrary to slavery notions.
