Couples separate from each other emotionally and establish separate lives. Depending on state: bigamy, impotence, felony, convictions, etc. No increases in midlife divorces - legal end of marriage that ended before. Midlife divorces correlated primarily with women"s working. Length of marriage is not indicative of marital success and divorce is not indicative of marital breakdown. Emphasis on personal fulfillment as a criterion if marriage should continue.
