Concept of adolescence starts to become popular (1904 - s. hall) -- children had to be kept out of adult domain. Were prohibited by law from attending school or learning to read and write. Life centered around field or domestic work. Forced to believe that they were inferior because of poverty or foreign origins. Children started working at age 6 for 12 hours a day.
