Supported by local community, church, and law. Typical of early to mid 20th century families. Emphasis on affection, friendship, and sexual gratification. Marked by adherence to a sharp division of labor. Emphasis on self-development, flexible roles, and communication about problems. Women specialize in housework and childcare and men specialize in paid work outside the home. Marriage creates a bargain where individuals complement each others" skills.
