By mid-19th century strong interest in social change & family issues. Much of our thinking today is dominated by this time period. Men went off to the factory work (earned $). Women stayed home caretaking (did not earn $). Fundamental shift: producing most of what the family consumes consuming/buying what the family needs. Familial mode of production: labor market mode of production. Concept: origin of families will tell us where families are going (through all stages).
