Geopolitical framework - shifting balance of power. Economic and social development - surviving neoliberalism. Large tropical rainforest of the amazon - right around the equator. Amazon - largest in terms of volume. Fair amount of precipitation throughout most of the region. Strip of andean mountain = some of the driest regions. It gets much warmer and changes the patterns. El nino years - every 5-10 years or so. Burst of warm air comes in and creates flooding and drought. A lot more rain in areas that already get a small amount of rain. As you go up in height, the colder and drier the climate becomes. Adjust crops and agriculture to these different levels. Swampy zonal areas, tierra caliente, tierra templada, tierra fria, tierra helado. Have tropical trees and in-tact forest cover, certain crops grow well under the forest canopy. Efforts to get small-scale farmers to engage in growing crops that grow in these climates/areas.
