Results of weathering is the weakening and breakdown of solid rock. Product is a layer of loose inorganic material called regolith: blanket over the un-fragmented rock, upper portion is soil. Soil development begins with the physical and chemical disintegration or rock exposed to the atmosphere (weathering) and to the action of water percolating down from the surface.
