Hendra & Nipah Virus
Causes encephalitis to pneumonia to death (75% case fatality rate with and without
support)
Can recover from disease, but it can come back and kill you (even months later years
later)
Predominantly effects horses
Main vector & host = bats
Nipah zoonotic disease
o Bats have antibodies against the virus
o Outbreak: driver = cultural/agricultural practices date palm sap is collected
and sold; as sap drips out of tree and into pot, fruit bats drink the juice and may
contaminate it with saliva/urine person drinks it transmit to other humans
through saliva/bodily fluids

90% chance of babies having CRF if pregnant mom has it
hearing loss, blindness, and other developmental problems
